Why Is My Printer Not Printing? Find Where the Job Stops
When your printer is not printing, the job has stopped somewhere between the app, the print queue, the cable or network, and the printer itself. Tell the checker below what happens when you print. It points to the stopping point and its fix, including the steps HP, Epson, Canon and Brother give.
The job can’t leave your computer because the printer looks offline. That is usually a network address change, a different Wi-Fi network, or a paused queue.
What to do
Restart the printer and router.
Check the printer and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
Follow the offline checker to find the exact cause.
What you see when you press Print tells you where the job stopped. An offline message points to the connection, jobs piling up point to the queue, and a blinking light points to the printer. Blank paper means the job arrived and the fault is ink or toner. Find your row, print the test it names, then try the fix.

Nothing happens and the computer says offline
The computer can’t reach the printer: a changed address or a different Wi-Fi network
The connection. The computer can’t reach the printer, so it shows offline. The printer offline checker tests the network address.
The printer. An error on the printer stops every job until it is cleared: paper, a jam, an open cover or a cartridge problem.
Two test pages tell you which half to look at. The printer’s own test page, printed from its buttons, doesn’t involve your computer at all. The computer’s test page goes through the driver, queue and connection; Microsoft describes it as a way to confirm Windows can communicate with the printer.[2] The test page guide shows both.
What should I check on my computer?
Make sure the right printer is selected and set as the default, then look at its queue for stuck or paused jobs. Windows also has a printer troubleshooter, and a Mac lets you resume a paused printer or add it again. Then print the computer’s test page to see whether the fix worked.
Windows
Basic connection checks before deeper fixes
Turn the printer off and unplug it, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and turn it on.
USB: check the cable at both ends and try a different USB port.
Wi-Fi: make sure the PC and printer are on the same network; use the printer's own wireless test if it has one.
Printer in error state: check paper, ink/toner, covers and paper jams.
Open System Settings and click Printers & Scanners in the sidebar.
Control-click the printer in the Printers list, choose Remove Printer, then confirm with Remove Printer.
Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, select the printer and click Add (or click IP to add it by IP address/host name with AirPrint, IPP, LPD or HP Jetdirect - Socket).
Wait a minute or two for it to appear and install any software it asks for.
A print job passes through four places: the app, the print queue on your computer, the connection, and the printer. It stops at one of them. The most common causes are a printer that shows offline, a stuck job blocking the queue, an error on the printer such as a jam or empty cartridge, or the wrong printer selected.
Why is my Epson printer not printing?
Epson’s own checks: the printer is on and the cable is secure, it isn’t offline or pending, the Epson driver for your model is selected, and no stuck jobs are waiting in the queue. If paper comes out blank instead, run a nozzle check; that is an ink problem, not a connection problem.
Why is my Brother printer not printing?
Brother’s steps start with errors on the display, then the connection: a direct USB cable or the same Wi-Fi network, the copy of the printer that shows idle rather than Offline, and no stuck jobs. If it still fails, reinstall Brother’s Full Driver & Software Package.
My printer is connected but won’t print. What now?
Connected but silent usually means a stuck queue or the wrong printer chosen. Cancel all jobs, restart the print spooler on Windows or resume the printer on a Mac, set the right printer as default, then print the computer’s test page.
Should I reinstall the printer driver?
Only after the quicker checks. Clear the queue, restart the printer and the computer, and remove and re-add the printer first. If the computer’s test page still fails, install the maker’s current driver or app.
