Why Is My Laser Printer Making Dirty Pages?

Dirty pages from a laser printer, such as a gray haze, toner specks or spots, usually mean loose toner or paper dust inside the printer, a worn drum or toner cartridge, or paper and humidity problems. Print a cleaning page first. If spots repeat at the same gap, measure it: the distance tells you which part to replace.

Why do laser printers make dirty pages?

A laser printer puts toner on a charged drum, rolls it onto the paper and melts it on with a heated fuser. Anything that lets toner land where the drum didn’t intend shows up as dirt. Over time, paper, toner and dust build up inside the printer and cause specks, smears and repeating marks; HP’s LaserJet guides give that as the reason for their cleaning page.[1] Paper dust on the cartridge can cause a gray background or dark bands.[2] The room matters too: Brother says heat and humidity add background shading,[3] and Canon offers a Low Humidity Mode for toner that scatters in dry air.[4] And a cartridge can wear out before its gauge says it is empty.[5] That is why the usual order is: clean, check the paper and room, then replace parts.

What laser dirt looks like

Drawn examples, not scans of real prints. Compare them with your printout to pick the closest match.

Gray haze and specksA light gray background with random toner specks.
gap
Repeating spotsThe same mark at an equal gap down the page. The gap names the part.
GhostingA faint copy of the image repeats lower on the page.
Laser streaksA light streak and a dark line running down the page.

Print a page that shows the dirt

The uniformity page is a flat gray field, so haze and specks stand out. The blank page has only rulers on it: anything else that prints is coming from inside the printer. The repeat-defect page has a scale for measuring the gap between spots.

What to look for: laser uniformity page

  • Vertical light streaks in every field usually mean low toner or a dirty part along the paper path.
  • Dark lines or specks that repeat down the page come from a roller. Measure the gap on the repeat-defect page.

Spots repeating down the page: measure the gap

A spot that comes back at the same distance is caused by something that turns: the drum, a roller in the cartridge, or the fuser. Measure from the top of one spot to the top of the next. HP’s method is to line up the zero of its repeat ruler with the first mark and read which part sits beside the next one.[6] The distances differ by model, so use the numbers for your printer only.

PrinterRepeat distance: part
HP LaserJet P3010 series (P3015)38, 50 or 95 mm: print cartridge · 43.6 mm: print engine · 76 or 79 mm: fuser[7]
Brother HL-L5000D, L5100DN, L5200DW, L6200DW, L6250DW1.5 in.: toner cartridge · 3.7 in.: drum unit[8][9]
Brother HL-2140, HL-2150N, HL-2170W75 mm (2.95 in.): drum unit[10]
Lexmark MS521, MS621, B2546, B2650, M124697, 47 or 38 mm: imaging unit[11]
Lexmark MS331, MS431, MS439, B3340, B3442, M134296 or 37.7 mm: imaging unit · 43.5 or 37.5 mm: toner · 52 mm: transfer roller · 79.8 or 62.5 mm: fuser[12]

Brother lasers with 94 mm drum marks, and other models with tables in their manuals, are in the repeat-defect ruler. Dots with no regular spacing usually mean loose toner inside the printer rather than a part, Brother says; wipe it out with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.[13]

HP laser printer spots on paper

On LaserJet Pro M304 to M405 models, HP’s first step for specks, smears and repeating marks is a cleaning page: Setup, then Printer Maintenance, Print Quality Tools, Cleaning Page.[1] On the older M1130 and M1210, the cleaning page is in the driver and may need to run several times.[14] If spots stay, look at the green drum on the cartridge without touching it: scratches or fingerprints mean a new toner cartridge.[15] For a gray background, HP’s order is fresh paper, a different paper type, lower toner density, a check of temperature and humidity, then a new cartridge.[16] A mark at the same spot on every page of a P1560 or P1600 means a damaged cartridge.[17] Smears on the leading edge point to dirty media guides or debris in the paper path.[18]

Brother laser printer dirty pages

For a gray background on the HL-L2350DW family, Brother says to check the room, clean the drum, then replace the toner cartridge and finally the drum unit.[3] For toner specks, match the driver’s Media Type to the paper before cleaning the drum.[19] If you see lines rather than specks, the laser lines and streaks page covers corona wire and drum cleaning.

Canon imageCLASS dirty prints

Canon ties splattered toner on imageCLASS MF445dw to MF455dw models to unsuitable paper or low toner.[20] If the printed paper itself comes out dirty, run Clean Fixing Assembly from Menu, Adjustment/Maintenance, Maintenance, with plain paper loaded.[21] Black streaks along the leading edge can be reduced with the Special Processing option for wrinkles and streaks, at the cost of speed.[22] If only copies are dirty, clean the platen glass and the underside of the document feeder.[23]

Lexmark: print the quality test pages first

Lexmark’s guides start every print-quality fix with the Print Quality Test Pages, under Settings, Troubleshooting.[24] For mottled print and dots, it says to confirm a genuine toner cartridge, check for leaked toner, then replace the imaging unit if it is near the end of its life.[25] Repeat distances for two Lexmark families are in the table above.

Fixed? Print the uniformity page again

A clean gray field with no specks means the dirt is gone. If you now see streaks rather than spots, go to laser printer lines and streaks. If toner rubs off when you touch it, see printer smudging.

Questions people ask

Why is my laser printer printing dirty pages?

Usually because loose toner, paper dust or debris has built up inside the printer, or because the drum or toner cartridge is worn. Damp or unsuitable paper and very dry air can also make toner land where it shouldn’t. Print a cleaning page first, then check the cartridge and drum.

Why does my HP laser printer leave spots on paper?

HP’s LaserJet guides say paper, toner and dust build up inside the printer and cause specks and repeating marks, and the first fix is a cleaning page from the printer’s maintenance menu. If spots repeat at a fixed gap, measure it: on many models a repeating mark points to the toner cartridge.

How do I get rid of a gray background on laser prints?

Make sure the paper hasn’t already been through the printer, try a different paper or paper type setting, lower the print density, and check the room isn’t very dry or humid. If the haze stays, replace the toner cartridge, then the drum unit if your printer has a separate one.

Can I clean the drum myself?

On many Brother lasers, yes. Slide the green tab on the drum unit to clean the corona wire, then put the tab back to its home position. HP cartridges have the drum built in, so a scratched or marked drum means a new cartridge. Don’t touch the drum surface.
